2010F/Wのコレクションを最後に、ニューヨークファッションウィークは、ミッドタウンのテントからリンカーンセンターのダムロシュパークへと移ります。

アルミーター・デザインがクリエイトした今年のテントには、オマージュとして多数の追憶メッセージが一面に描かれました。ファッション界の著名人らの言葉がテントを飾り、ブライアントパークでの思い出を振り返ったのでした。

メルセデスベンツ・ファッションウィークは半年に１回行われる、ビッグイベント。

17年間のうちに、31コレクション、2500ものショーが行われました。ランウェイショーを「オーガナイズし、集中化させ、モダナイズさせる」というのが最初の指針で、そしてニューヨークを世界のファッションの先端とさせることを目標としたのでした。

現在ではテント外にまでファッションショーが拡大し、いかにニューヨークファッションウィークが大きく成長したかを物語っています。

これまでに、たくさん先駆的なイベントがテントで行われてきました。その一つに、アイザック・ミズラヒの1994年秋コレクションを追ったドキュメンタリー『Unzipped』の、ガートルードテントでの初上映があります。

このコレクションは、1922年のドキュメンタリー映画『北極の怪異（北極のナヌーク』にインスパイアされたもの。背景幕が透明のメッシュカーテンなので、ショーの最中もバックステージの混乱と騒然があるがままに見えるという設定になっていました。

その他に記憶に残ることといえば、2000年にPETAのプロテスターたちが、反毛皮抗議のために、オスカー・デ・ラ・レンタとマイケル・コースのショーに赤いペンキと豆腐で攻撃したことです。

このようにたくさんの思い出がテントに残る中、これまでになく衝撃的な出来事が今回のファッションウィーク１日目に起こりました。

それはBCBGMAXAZRIAのショーの朝でした。ショーの最中に、出席していたゲストたちのブラックベリーとiPhoneが一斉に光り、バイブレートした瞬間です。

それは、アレキサンダー・マックイーンが死去したというニュースを伝えるテキストメッセージでした。このニュースはファッション界を大きく揺さぶり、アナ・ウィンターはショーが終わる前にテントを去りました。彼の死後、ナオミ・キャンベルによって追悼ショーが行われ、ショーの前には、黙祷が捧げられました。

ブライアントパークテントに別れを惜しむと同時に、リンカーンセンターで今後繰り広げられるであろう、ファッション界の無作法とデザイナーの修羅場が、楽しみでなりません。

Memories of Days in the Park 

Since 1993, New York Fashion Week has been held in the tents at Bryant Park. FW 2010 fashion week marks the last season of the tents in midtown Manhattan before New York Fashion Week moves to Damrosch Park in Lincoln Centre next season. This year, the tent design was created by Almeter Design, which offers sentimental messages through graphics and text that pay homage to the venue. Quotes from notable personalities in the fashion industry decorate the tents, as they look back on and their memories of Bryant Park.

Mercedes Benz fashion week is an iconic biannual event which has gone on to do 17 years, with 31 seasons and over 2, 500 shows. The initial mission statement for the shows was “to organize, centralize and modernize” runway shows and making New York the pinnacle of the world’s fashion stage. Now as the shows have outgrown the tents, it proves how huge the effect of NYFW has become in recent years.

Many innovative and pioneering events took place in the tents such as the debut of Issac Mizrahi’s Unzipped documentary of his Fall 1994 collection, shown in the “Gertrude” tent. The collection was inspired by the 1922 classic Nanook of the North. The backdrop was a transparent mesh curtain that revealed all of the crazy and hectic moments that go on backstage while the show is going on.

Other memorable moments include PETA protestors in 2000, storming the runways of Oscar De Le Renta and Michael Kors armed with red paint and tofu as a stand against fur the designer’s use in their collections.

As many moments graced the tents, no moment will stand so strong and shocking as the first day of this fashion week, It was the morning of the BCBGMAXAZRIA show. In the middle of the show Blackberrys and iphones started to light up and vibrate with text messages to guests that were in attendance for the show of the news that Alexander McQueen passed away. The news rocked the fashion community so hard, Anna Wintour ran out of the tents before the finale of the show finished, upon learning the news. Days following his death included a tribute show to Alexander McQueen put on by Naomi Campbell, and moments of silences were held before the start of shows.

As we bid farewell to the Bryant Park tents we looking forward to the move to Lincoln centre as new memories, fashion faux pas and designer pandemonium will be created.
