感謝祭の１週間前ともなると、ほとんどニューヨーカーは、七面鳥や、このホリデーシーズンの始まりを家族で集まって祝い、楽しむことで頭がイッパイになります。でも私の場合はちょっと違う。私にとって感謝祭とは、ニューヨーク中のホリデーウィンドウがお目見えする日。そして中でも特別なのが、バーグドルフなのです！
ニューヨークのデパートのホリデーウィンドウは、年々さらに凝ったデザインへと進化していて、ホリデーシーズン中の観光客にとって人気スポットであることはご存知のとおり。中でもバーグドルフ・グッドマンのウィンドウは特に人気で、観光客で混み合います。バーグドルフのデパートは、向かい合う２つの建物に分かれていて、そのうちストリートに面しているのが５面。つまり５ブロック分のウィンドウが、クリスマスファッションと共にディスプレイされているのです。
このウィンドウディスプレイを毎年手がけているのは、バーグドルフのヴィジュアル・プレゼンテーションのディレクター、デビッド・ホーイ。今年のテーマは「Compendium of Curiosities（好奇心の大要）」で、これは『不思議の国のアリス』の作者、ルイス・キャロルからインスピレーションを得ているのだとか。ホーイは毎年、ふんだんに装飾を詰め込み、いい意味でトゥーマッチなディスプレイで、人々を魅了し続けているのです。
今年のディスプレイはストーリー性があり、どこか風変わりで独特。見ているだけで楽しいホリデーシーズンにわくわくする気持ちがぐっとこみ上げてきます。ウィンドウによってシーンが異なり、図書館風のウィンドウは細かく切った紙で作られていて、まるでオートクチュールのスノーグローブのよう。別のウィンドウは、ねじり巻付く階段と砕かれた鏡をうまく組み合わせたディスプレイ、また別のウィンドウでは木製の操り人形が、まるでハートの女王様が着ていたかのようなドレスを身にまとっています。そしてその豪華な飾りが引き立てているシーズンの主役と言えば・・・、もちろんそれはガウン！ 今年このウィンドウディスプレイに選ばれたガウンは、アレキサンダー・マックイーン、モニーク・リュイリエー、マーク・ジェイコブス、パメラ・ローランド、などなど。
バーグドルフのホリデーウィンドウは２３日に一般公開し、集まった人々を魅了しました。それは、宗教に関係なく、みんなのクリスマス・スピリットを鼓舞させるのです。バーグドルフ以外にも、バーニーズやメイシーズ、サックス・フィフス・アベニュー、ヘンリ・ベンデル、ヴィトン、ブルーミングデールズなどで、豪華なホリデーウィンドウが楽しめます。そのマジックを見たい方は、このサイトへどうぞ。

Holiday Windows at Bergdorfs
When it is a week before Thanksgiving in America, New Yorkers normally think of turkey and getting together with their families to celebrate the beginning of the festive season, however this isn’t the case with me, the thought of Thanksgiving means the unveiling of the holiday window displays in New York, like Bergdorf’s in particular.
The holiday displays in New York department stores become more and more elaborate each year, it is no wonder they are one of the main tourist attractions during the holiday season. Bergdorf Goodman's windows are considered to be the holiday high point during this festive time of year. Bergdorf’s windows span five city blocks and are filled with an array of Christmas fashion. The visionary behind Bergdorf's holiday windows is David Hoey, the stores director of visual presentation. The theme for 2009 is "Compendium of Curiosities," an inspiration by Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll, Hoey always succeeds his yearly challenge to dazzle and beguile people's senses, as each window is deliberately overstuffed for sensory overload.
The themed windows have a story that taps into our whimsical, child-like side, as you cant help but get excited about the season when peering into each window. Various scenes play out such as the library scene which is made of intricately cut pieces of paper looking like a haute couture snow globe, another window features a crooked winding staircase, shattered Venetian mirrors while another one features a wooden marionette wearing a dress that resembles something that the Queen of Hearts would have worn. It is these tantalizing and heavily opulent backdrops that serve for the real stars of the holiday....the gowns! This year's designers who are showcased is Alexander McQueen, Monique Lhuillier, Marc Jacobs, Pamela Roland and more.
The Bergdorf windows were officially revealed November 23rd to an awe-inspired crowd who in turn inspired everyone else to get into the Christmas spirit, whether you wanted to admit it or not. Other show stopping holiday windows in the city can be seen at Barney's, Macy's, Saks 5th Avenue, Henri Bendel, Louis Vuitton and Bloomingdales.
